The Cántir vegetative roof system stands out for being the simplest and most versatile. It is a flat, walkable roof of the extensive garden type that incorporates drip irrigation, allowing for multiple options for vegetative finishes, ranging from low-height options such as grass or succulents to shrubs and trees.
The substrate of the Cántir system is composed of a mixture of organic components (vegetable soil, peat, etc.) and granular mineral components. The type and thickness of the substrate are determined based on the vegetative finish.
TECHNICAL ADVISORY
Are you an architect, interior designer or designer and need help with your design?
SingularGreen provides technical advisory during the project design, installation development, and afterwards. Our goal is a perfect installation and commissioning of the green roof. If you need information, please contact us through the form or call us at +34 966 282 640 -+34 673 768 624.
Installing a walkable green roof has certain similarities with the installation of non-walkable green roofs. The major difference lies in the vegetative layer, but to make everything clearer, here’s a video of a walkable green roof installation.
The different materials used in this green roof must perform the following functions:
- Waterproofing
- Geotextile with a weight of 100-200gsm
- Nodular perforated sheeting
- Substrate
- Irrigation
- Vegetative layer
Benefits of having a walkable green roof
REDUCTION OF THE URBAN HEAT ISLAND EFFECT
The surface temperature of green roofs typically does not exceed 30°C, as opposed to conventional roofs that can reach 70°C.
REDUCTION OF SURFACE RUNOFF
Green roofs store rainwater in the layers with a retention function, reducing the volume of water that needs to be evacuated during precipitation.
IMPROVED THERMAL INSULATION
Green roofs have high thermal inertia thanks to the water in the substrate, and benefit from protection against wind and shading from the vegetation.
IMPROVED ACOUSTIC INSULATION
The vegetative layer (plants + substrate) reduces noise through the absorption of sound waves in the substrate and reflection in the vegetation.
IMPROVED AIR QUALITY
Plants are able to absorb certain volatile toxic elements in the air, converting them into organic matter.
ENABLEMENT OF NEW URBAN GREEN SPACES
Thanks to green roofs, unused spaces on buildings can have a second chance to go green.
INCREASED LIFESPAN OF WATERPROOFING
Green roofs reduce movements due to expansions and contractions, and the substrate protects the membrane from ultraviolet rays.
PROMOTION OF NATIVE SPECIES
Green roofs allow for the use of virtually any plant species, including native ones.
INCREASED BIODIVERSITY
Not only will planted species benefit from this new space, but the fauna is also part of the biodiversity that this nature-based solution promotes.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most suitable system for my project or home?
When planning a green roof, in addition to everything explained, we also need to take into account the following points:
- The budget. Depending on the estimated cost, we will opt for one system or another.
- The load that the slab supports. If we have a slab with little resistance, we will look for lightweight solutions.
- Orientation. It is very important when choosing our vegetative cover.
- Inclination. If we exceed certain degrees of inclination, additional drainage and soil support systems must be considered.
- Transport of materials to the roof.
It is important to consider this point to choose systems that are easy to transport in case of difficult access.
At SingularGreen, we will advise you on the best system or design custom solutions for your case.
What care does a low-maintenance green roof require?
Low-maintenance green roofs usually use Sedum and succulent species that do not require any type of watering.
However, they can and often are colonized by invasive species that do not guarantee the initial aesthetic finish. This is solved by removing these invasive species annually.
What uses can a green roof have?
A green roof is compatible with any type of activity, walks, sports, hospitality… We just have to combine, depending on the type of species, the vegetative surfaces, with surfaces suitable for the existing activity.
How many years of useful life does a green roof have?
In Germany, according to a report on construction damage, it was shown that while 80% of flat roofs present the first damages after 5 years of construction, a green roof, with a correct choice of waterproofing and good execution of the joints, has an almost endless useful life.
Can water enter the house with a green roof?
No, if good waterproofing is carried out with the correct materials.
We have to take into account that asphalt sheets, the most commonly used waterproofing products, are susceptible to being perforated by roots and causing moisture problems.
To avoid filtration problems, PVC or EPDM sheets should be installed and the joints made correctly.
