In Jardíntxikerra street in Bilbao, we installed a vertical garden covering a large area of 100 m². This project may at first glance be seen as ornamental, but the truth is that it also contributes to improving air quality and local biodiversity. The design of the vertical garden incorporates a variety of native plants, specifically selected to suit Bilbao’s climate and environmental conditions.

The system used to make this vertical garden in Bilbao was the F+P system and had an extension of 100m2.

This garden was upholstered with about 3000 plants.

A large number of species were chosen because the aim was to provide different volumes to the surface as it was originally very elongated, straight and needed to break with that linearity so that the result was visually much more aesthetic.

To fulfill this task, the plants that were selected were those that could withstand the climate of the area. Specifically we had the handicap that the wall was located to the north and therefore the plants would have to withstand a cold and wet climate, something characteristic of Bilbao. The selected species that were planted in the garden were perfectly adapted to the situation and hence one of the successes of the vertical garden of Bilbao.

Plants selected for the Bilbao garden

  • Cyrtomium fortunei
  • Erigeron karvinskianus
  • Lonicera nitida
  • Heuchera sp.
  • Lysimachia nummularia
  • Pachysandra terminalis
  • Plectranthus coleoides
  • Tulbaghia violacea
