House San Juan,
Alicante

In an innovative initiative for a private home, we implemented a 15 m2 vertical garden that extends across two floors, creating a semi-interior green core visible from almost anywhere in the house thanks to its glass envelope.

This design allows residents to enjoy constant contact with nature, whether relaxing in the living room or from the privacy of the master bedroom. Integrating this natural element into the home brings with it not only beauty and serenity, but also benefits to overall health and well-being.

Given the challenge of limited natural lighting on the first floor, a carefully selected artificial lighting system was implemented to simulate sunlight, ensuring healthy plant growth. As the garden ascends to the upper floors, it receives abundant natural light, highlighting its splendor and diversity.

This solution has not only achieved a balance between technology and nature, but has also brought great satisfaction to the inhabitants of the house by providing them with a connection to nature without leaving the house.

The 16 m2 garden was located on an exterior wall but could be observed through a glass window from any room in the house.

Hydroponic gardens

In this type of vertical gardens all the nutrients are distributed through irrigation, so the control of the hydroponic parameters of the nutrient solution is decisive for the species.

Plants growing in hydroponic systems are especially sensitive to changes in pH and conductivity, as well as to fungi and other pests, so it is of vital importance to keep these parameters within the margins admissible by the plant.

When selecting the species we thought about the needs of the vertical garden. In this case the garden needed species that could adapt to long periods of sun exposure.

The plants on both the first and second floors had to combat sun exposure. In addition, there was a small disadvantage, and that is that the garden was located next to a boiler outlet, thus exposing these plants to high temperatures. For this reason, the species we considered most suitable for these circumstances were the following:

  • Chlorophytum comosum
  • Erigon Karvinskianus
  • Plectranthus coleoides
  • Asparagus sprengeri
  • Dryopteris erytrosora
  • Cyrtomium falcatum
  • Adiantum capillus-veneris
  • Blechnum spicant

When we design the gardens we take into account the species we are going to install and from there we distribute them according to their textures and colors creating specific designs for each job.
