The protagonists of this post are ferns for vertical gardens.
There is nothing that brings us more happiness than seeing our vertical gardens thrive.
With utmost care, we design and install vertical gardens, and we believe that species selection is a fundamental part of achieving fruitful development of green walls.
Therefore, we want to talk to you about a species that we really like, which is ferns. We have selected five species of ferns for vertical gardens that are our favourites, and we would like to share a brief overview of each.
Ferns for vertical gardens.
Polystichum tsus-simense
Commonly known as the Korean rock fern, it is a perennial herbaceous plant native to East Asia.
This name comes from its ability to grow in shady places, particularly on rocky walls.
It thrives in shaded or partially sunny areas, in fertile, well-drained soils with high humidity. In addition to rocky places, it can also be found in gardens and indoor pots. They are often seen arranged in small groups.
Dryopteris erythrosora
Commonly known as the autumn fern, Japanese fern, or copper shield fern, it is a herbaceous plant native to Asia and the Philippines. Like the previous fern, this type also grows in the shady areas of forests and mountains. These ornamental plants can be found in gardens.
The leaves have a coppery hue when they are young, but over time, they change to a dark green.
Athyrium niponicum “Red Beauty”
Commonly known as the Oriental lady fern, it is a species of fern native to East Asia. It thrives in shady and moist locations and can be seen in clusters of greyish-green with reddish central veins.
Dryopteris affinis “Crispa”
It is a perennial fern with light green leaves native to western and southern Europe and southwestern Asia.
It is found in shady and moist locations, requiring cool temperatures and protection from frost.
Additionally, it tolerates well-drained soils. This species needs humidity and is easy to maintain throughout the year. It is an ornamental plant used to add colour to various gardens.
Polystichum polyblepharum
It is commonly known as Japanese lace fern or tassel fern. This is a dark green perennial fern that originates from Japan and South Korea.
It is cultivated ornamentally in temperate areas, thriving in shaded and semi-shaded locations, requiring moist and well-drained soil.
This species requires minimal maintenance and occasional pruning throughout the year.
