Nature-based solutions (NBS) are approaches and strategies that harness the potential of nature by using ecosystems and the services they provide to address environmental and social challenges.
The central idea is to work with nature rather than against it.
BNS recognises that ecosystems are fundamental to human well-being and sustainability.
But what do these solutions consist of?
The reality is that they can involve different types of actions, ranging from conservation, restoration and sustainable management of natural ecosystems, as well as the design of new green infrastructure.
One example of an isolated nature-based solution is vertical gardens, but the potential of this concept lies in something more global, such as the creation of urban green corridors, which are connected green areas in cities that promote biodiversity, improve air quality and provide recreational spaces for people.

These examples of nature-based solutions are
1. ALCOY, RENATURALISATION OF CITIES BY THE BIODIVERSITY FOUNDATION, NEXTGENERATION FUNDS. SUBSIDY OBTAINED 3.580.564,08€.
This is an action that will connect the natural parks of Font Rotja and Mariola, through their ravines as new corridors designed from the perspective of ecosystem restoration:
- naturalisation of the water,
- cleaning (of rubbish, autochthonous species, obstacles, canalisations, etc.) allowing a permeable natural riverbed
- planting of autochthonous species, new habitats for fauna.
2. ORIHUELA RENATURALISATION OF THE CITY BY THE BIODIVERSITY FOUNDATION. NEXTGENERATION FUNDS (awaiting resolution).
This is a renaturalisation of the most urban section of the cities through the design of vegetated pedestrian walkways above the level of the river, permeabilisation of the bottom of the currently concreted riverbed, planting of native riverside vegetation in the riverbed and adjoining areas, etc.
This action links the city with the natural surroundings upstream and the orchards downstream, as well as incorporating transversal axes of connection with Monte San Miguel and the Palmeral.
3. LORCA: EUIA INNOVATION ACTIONS. NEW EUROPEAN BAUHAUS. EUROPEAN REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT FUND (ERDF). SUBSIDY OBTAINED 4.779.752 €.
In the upper district of Lorca, the situation of substandard housing is alarming. This project aims to use innovation to pilot the use of a plant-based envelope to cover the buildings and improve their thermal insulation against the cold and heat.
The project proposes the renaturalisation of a water tank to collect runoff water and use it to irrigate the park in which it is located and supply water to the roofs and facades of the buildings on which the new GreenThermoWall technology will be applied, based on low-density seeded bio-polyurethane projection.
4. LOJA: SUSTAINABLE TOURISM STRATEGY IN DESTINATION OF THE MINISTRY OF TOURISM. NEXTGENERATION FUNDS. AWAITING RESOLUTION
The municipality of Loja hides several isolated and degraded natural water springs, unknown to citizens and tourists. This project proposes the recovery of all of them and the creation of a blue ring through shaded paths for walkers and cyclists, as well as the signposting and adaptation of the same, linked to the Genil River and within a programme of sustainable tourism carried out in coordination with the hotel and catering offer of the city that will offer combined experiences and focused on the arrival of tourists in their own vehicles or by train as Loja has a high speed train station (AVE).
Loja with this action could be a new tourist destination in Andalusia, which suffers severe water shortages in summer periods, position itself as a great alternative and climatic refuge.
5. VILLALBILLA: CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FROM THE FUNDACIÓN DE LOS FERROCARRILES ESPAÑOLES F.P.S. AWAITING DECISION
Villalbilla used to be two villages separated by more than 6Km, Villalbilla and Los Hueros. The facilities are decentralised in two nuclei and the only communication is thought for the vehicle.
The proposal proposes a renaturalisation from one end to the other by means of a cycle lane that promotes sustainable mobility and at the same time allows us to adapt the section of the roads according to the possibilities of each location.
All of this allows us to incorporate a ditch, eliminate impermeable pavements, reinforce the trees on roads and paths, reduce parking areas to incorporate vegetation, create boulevards, linear forests in the more rural sections, reduce the number of oversized lanes, etc.
If 100% of the project is implemented, Villalbilla will be the municipality with the most linear metres of lanes in Spain (0.76m/inhabitant).
6. BMW SUSTAINABILITY GRANT PROGRAMME
This grant is launched from the BMW headquarters to promote sustainable measures in its dealerships, including the incorporation of SbN.
The project studies the location and orientation of our client and proposes the design of a canopy on the south façade and lattices on the façades with more sun exposure, all of which are west facing.
The proposed system consists of narrow trays as planters with climbing and hanging vegetation on inert substrate fed by hydroponics and with a remote irrigation control system.
